Dr. Chapman Humanities 10H September 25, 2005 Ancient Greek Athletics Today, many Americans use various forms of entertainment to relax and take their focus off the stresses of everyday life. One example of entertainment can be found in the form of athletic or sporting events. Athletic competition can date back as far as 300 B.C. when the Greeks competed in the Olympics and ancient funeral games. Although, competition has evolved immensely over the years, ancient athletics held additional meaning and a certain intensity that simply cannot be found in today�s competition. Greek athletics took place as a way of marking an important event or special occasion. Unlike today�s athletics that take place annually, ancient Greek athletics commonly took place following the death of a great warrior.
