Introduction
In the monkeys paw, dream women and the signalman the writers use specific techniques to create mystery and suspense. For example in all of the stories there is a dark setting. The signalman was a dark setting because it was set in a valley of the train tunnel ‘so little sunlight ever found it’s way to this spot’.
In the monkeys paw the dark setting is the night ‘without the night was cold and wet’ in the dream women it is also dark and raining ‘listening to the dismal ceaseless moan of the wind in the wood’.
The stories are also the same by the theme of death and victims as in each story someone dies. In the signalman, the signalman himself dies. In the monkeys’ paw Herbert dies and in the dream women the mother dies.
They all also have mysterious characters in them. In the signalman the signalmen himself is very ‘closed in’. In the monkeys paw sergeant major Morris is very mystifying, we don’t know much about him, like who he is where he has come from or how he knows the family. And in the dream women Rebecca at first is very secretive about whom she really is.
