Hamlet - To Love or not to love Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

To Love or not to love Hamlet, the protagonist in William Shakespeare’s “Hamlet”, is probably one of the most inscrutable of all Shakespearean characters. While the play itself is easily followed, Hamlet’s actions and speeches leave the audience with scores of questions surrounding the lead character’s feelings. One question in particular: Did he love Gertrude and Ophelia? His mother betrayed him. His girlfriend neglected him. But did he still love them? He offers such contradicting speeches -- “I did love you,” “I loved you not” (3.1.115, 119) – that support the argument either way. However, towards the end of the play, it is made quite clear that Hamlet had nevertheless maintained his love for both these women. Hamlet shows obvious affection for Ophelia during the early passages of the play, and, although it may seem like he begins to lose hope for their love as the play progresses, he does not.
