The Blackfoot tribe moved all the time they, followed the buffalo and other animals they hunted. Because of this they had to be able to break down there camp quickly.
The Blackfoot’s lived in Tipis or in their own words “Nii-To-Yis” the only peoples home. Each Tipi was decorated differently and each having a special and sacred meaning.
After the men came back from a buffalo hunt and removed the buffalo hide, the woman would begin the task of “tanning the hide”. This process took several weeks.
The Tipis were mostly made of buffalo hides and were created by the women of the tribe. A lot of work went into making a Tipi. It took up to 20 hides to make just 1 Tipi.
Tipis were made only from female buffalo’s. The first step was to remove any scrap meat or fat. Then they were stretched onto long poles and were dried. Then they were rubbed in bear grease after it was completely soaked in they applied another mixture of boiled liver and brains.
