Guns, Germs and Steel Geography played a great role in determining which societies would become the most powerful and which wouldn’t. “Geography is destiny. Those early humans who settled in geographically advantageous areas produced agricultural surpluses that permitted their societies to support specialists. This specialization enabled some peoples to develop technologies, bureaucracies, and the guns, germs, and steel which allowed them to establish hegemony.” (Diamond). Many historians will agree with Diamond’s thesis that geography was the factor that many cultures advanced and others didn’t. Diamond believes that “history followed different courses for different peoples because of differences among peoples’ environments, not because of biological differences among people themselves” (Diamond 25). Some other critics disagree with Diamond. While they do agree that geography did have a factor in culture’s hegemony, they believe that there were also a variety of other factors that contributed to developed cultures.
