Discuss the mise-en-scene in the first three chapters of Dogville. Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The first impression that you have when watching Dogville is that of a joke or al least, of a theatrical play. And this is primarily because of the décor of the movie. The entire film is shot on one stage and a town has been built in miniature, the houses being drawn with chalk and having walls of air. The set is the one used in play, is all false, the mountains, the trees, even the sky and the sun and the moon. I think that the reason for which the director used this décor is that he wanted to focus the entire movie and our attention upon the characters, not the set around them. This is why the lack of glamour with which we are used to in most Hollywood films is first shocking. The set is also a symbol. The little town, with no horizon seems lost in space, alone in darkness, with only one connection with the real world, a road that they keep a constant watch on. It is like a close universe, in which very few people may enter, a universe that cannot be changed, in which “people have hopes in dreams in very hard circumstances”, they struggle to live, but is in vain. What I liked......
