“Eveline”: Frank or Fate
In the short story, “Eveline,” James Joyce portraits the dilemma faced by an early twentieth century young Irish woman torn between familial obligation and craving for happy life. The main character of the story is a terrified and indecisive girl, Eveline, poised between her past and her future. “Eveline” explores a girl’s hope and her attempts to escape from her life. She gets the opportunity to eschew the gloomy past, burdensome relationships, tortuous routine, and fetters of religion biased towards the dominance of males, with Frank, the man she thinks she loves, to a distant country in search of new life. Instead she decides to stay in the gloomy and dreary life she already knows. The fear of leaving home, uncertainty of the future and her Catholic upbringing shape the mind of Eveline and help us to analyze the decision she finally makes.
