1 Introduction
A lone and savage killer stalked the deserted streets of England’s northern towns. As police struggled to catch the maniac, 13 women died before the case reached its dramatic climax.
To his wife, Peter Sutcliffe was a caring man, careful and conservative in his habits. But his unremarkable appearance hid the signs of the vicious killer he was to become.
2 The first victim
Walking home through the West Yorkshire town of Keightley in the early hours of Saturday 5th July 1975, Irish-born Anna Rogulskyj was attacked from behind. Hit three times on the head with a hammer and left for dead, she was found scarcely breathing about an hour later. She was rushed to hospital, where it was discovered that she had also been slashed across the stomach. The bizarre attack left the police baffled, as there had been no sexual motive for the assault and the victim’s handbag was still intact. A 12-hour operation eventually saved Anna’s life. Miraculously, she had survived the Yorkshire Ripper’s first attack, however she still remembers nothing of the attack that shattered her......
