An ancient civilization is an advanced state of intellectual, cultural, and material development in human society that was marked by progress in the arts and sciences, the extensive use of record-keeping. This included writing, and the appearance of complex political and social institutions. Each civilization has a specific way of doing things and their own way of living. Also, each made their own contributions and inventions in life. Mesopotamia lasted from 9000 to 500 B.C. It was the area of the world�s first ancient civilization, Sumer. The name �Mesopotamia� was given by the Greeks in ancient times. Mesopotamia meant the land between two rivers. This was the name given because it was located between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. Mesopotamia is located in current- day Iraq. It was very hot and dry here. Also, there was seasonal flooding. This caused problems for the farmers because they couldn�t farm in such climates.
