THEMES: Emma, a novel by Jane Austen written in 1815 is a novel of social criticism. Personal worth and social acceptance in Emma�s society is valued on money and family history. Social acceptance clearly seen in the matches of marriage. Importance of personal worth seen when Emma attempts to raise Harriet�s (an orphan with no money and no known family history) social status by trying to match her with Mr. E.
