Huey Newton was an activist who help co-create the Black Panther Party in 1966, along with Bobby Seale. Huey Newton was born in Monroe, Louisiana on September 17 1942. When he was a young child he and his family moved to Oakland California in 1945 so they could take advantage of WWII wartime industries.
As he grew up through the Oakland public school system he said that he did not learn anything other than basic reading. Newton said “I was made to feel uncomfortable and ashamed of being black,” with that he responded by consistently defying authority and in return he got frequent suspensions. He did not learn to read well until he had finished high school. Newton said, "I actually learned to read--really read more than just 'dog' and 'cat,' which was about all I could do when I left high school--by listening to records of Vincent Price reading great poetry, and then looking up the poems to see how the words looked."
