Medea What is this constant fear we have of people not like us? Why is it that we dread to come face to face with the Other, the exotic, the foreign? Why is it that its seemingly lack of relatable features make us rear back and cautiously step into the realm of the familiar. Why is the Other such a threatening figure? We all live our lives according to what is familiar in the people directly surrounding us. This collective society agrees upon certain traditions, rules, laws that must be followed. And then It appears. It enters into our lives not unlike a dark shadow. We see that this Other has arms, legs, a head, a body. We see that, much like us, It is human. And yet at the same time, It is not like us. It follows not the same rules, traditions, laws. The Other seems to follow a different code. It is a barbarian invasion. It is a reflection of ourselves. Medea, the title character in Euripides� play is this Other. She is a �barbarian� in a see of Greeks. She comes from a land beyond, outside the collective Greek experience. She does things, and thinks thing......
