After observing at both a 3rd grade elementary classroom and an 8th grade middle school class, and volunteering at both a preschool and an English as Second Language after-school/summer school program, I learned a great deal about the things a teacher goes through. I saw the potential situations that must be dealt with, as well as the daily tasks that make up an average day for a teacher. A normal day begins approximately an hour before the students get to school. This is time spent making changes in the day�s lesson plans, grading assignments, speaking to other teachers, and relaxing before the day begins. When the students come into the classroom, the teacher must get the students in the right mind frame for the school day by calming them down, making announcements, taking role, etc. This part of the day is usually routine and doesn�t differ much between grade levels. Throughout the day, an elementary school teacher often uses projects, stories, and pictures to teach her classroom lessons.
