THE SPIRIT CATCHES YOU AND YOU FALL DOWN The story takes place in the United States of America. Mainly two cultures are involved: American culture and Hmong culture. Obviously, the difference in language is the first barrier between them. The encounter between the two cultures began when refugees from Laos came to the United States in 1980. The main characters in this story are the Lees. As a protagonist we have Lia, a Hmong child who suffers from epilepsy. The secondary characters in this story are the American doctors. The main characteristics that describe the Hmong culture are that it is very spiritualized and animist, they have strong beliefs mainly in spirits, they give their children a special treatment, they practice sacrifice of animals. They are very superstitious and are afraid of making spirits mad. Their language and traditions were passed along to each generation by tales or stories. In contrast with the Hmong culture, American culture is very advanced in medicine and technology, they don�t believe in spirits. They use medicine to treat any health problem.......
