Geography Easter Island is the southeastern tip of the Polynesian triangle. Easter Island (also known as Rapa Nui) is also the most isolated place on earth with it�s nearest inhabited neighbor being Pitcairn Island, 1,500 miles away. Unpredictable showers bring an average of 100 inches of rainfall a year to the island. Trees are sparse because early natives cut them all down. Three extinct volcanoes are the only thing that disrupts the rolling hills and flat plateaus of Rapa Nui. History Easter Island history before contact with Europeans is controversial. The remnants of oral history that still remain of Easter Island say that a person named Hotu Matua was the first person to inhabit the island. Just a few centuries after human settlement, by the year 800 A.D., deforestation of the island began. This escalated at a rampant rate, until the entire forest disappeared.
