The Elizabethans admired the balance of intelligence and emotion, where ambition was part of the balance equation. However, they also believed that excessiveness within the field of ambition can consequently lead to one�s downfall. Shakespeare, who lived during the Elizabethan era, made these thoughts come true in many of his plays, one of which is Julius Caesar. In this play two characters whose ambition stands out above all are Julius Caesar, whose enthusiasm blinded him from the consequences of his actions, and Caius Cassius, whose desire resulted in Caesar�s murder and his own suicide. Julius Caesar�s ambition continuously increases throughout the play until its peak before his death. Caesar�s enthusiasm blinds him from the obvious signs of his inevitable death, whether they were foreshadowed from the gods, or a plea from his wife concerning a dream she had. His ambition is revealed early on in the play; a great example of this quality shown by Caesar was in a conversation he had with his wife: Caesar shall forth: the things that threatened me Ne�er looked but on my back......
