Since the beginning of life, the earth and its environment have experienced many different cultural changes beginning with the earliest form of humans, the Homo sapiens. Dating back to nearly 160,000 years ago, Homo sapiens survived by the techniques of hunting and gathering. Since then three major cultural changes have occurred: the agricultural revolution, the industrial-medical revolution, and the information and globalization revolution. These changes have greatly increased the impact on the environment in three ways. They have allowed for more energy and new technologies to control the basic needs and wants of humans. They have also allowed the expansion of the human population due to the surplus of food supplies and longer life spans. And last of all, they have greatly increased resource use, pollution output, and environmental degradation.
