“A Rose for Emily,” by William Faulkner is a story filled with symbolism, which is thoroughly distributed and revealed throughout the entire story. Faulkner uses vivid images of life, color and objects to contrast the past with the present era. The story addresses the changes in the Southern society after the Civil War. In this story, Faulkner portraits the conflict between the old and the new South, the past and the present--with his main character, Emily, and the things around her representing the perishing old traditions and the present being expressed through the setting, people of town and the words of narrator. Miss Emily is a “fallen monument” (245), of Southern customs, past values and nobility, which existed before the civil war. Her southern heritage and points of view are represented through her actions. Her stubbornness and unrelenting attitude are very strong characteristics of the Southern heritage. She refuses to believe that the times were changing and rejects the idea of changing into a new society. She comes from an upper class family and grows up under her......
