The Killer Angels. By Micheal Shaara. (New York: David McKay, 2003. Pp 345. $7.99) The book The Killer Angel discusses the four days of a battle which is also known as the Battle of Gettysburg, the turning point of the Civil War. The author, Michael Shaara, does a great job of imagery. He helps the reader create an image of what the battle was like. The battle of Gettysburg began on June 29, 1863 and ended four days later, on July 3, 1863. The author expresses that the solider and the generals, feel that they can die for their beliefs whether they are on the Confederate side or the Union side. �I used to command those boys...Difficult thing to fight men you used to command...Swore an oath too...But...couldn�t fight against home. Not against your own family. And yet...we broke the vow.� (p.191). The author also makes it clear that the war was fought because of a clash in cultures and that the Union Army fought, not for prize or conquest, but to make a people free. �We are fighting for freedom from the rule of what is to us a foreign government.� (p. 65 & 66).
