John Donne's A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In John Donne’s poem “A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning,” one might be initially confused by the title since valedictions are read at funerals. When one is reading this poem, the feeling is not dreary and depressing as a funeral could be. Instead, this poem is about a parting but the parting of two lovers. In this poem, the narrator is leaving the woman figure in his life, which might or might not be his wife. He explains how often when one leaves their loved one they forget about them because they are not together. This is not the case with the narrator. For their love is enduring, and no matter where they are is still strong. This poem argues the essence of spiritual and sensual relationship that is not caught up with physical attributes. The first two stanzas set up the idea of separating and parting. In stanza one, Donne suggests that the separation of lovers in similar to the separation at death.
