The Cold War was a bitter verbal rivalry between the two superpowers of the United States and the Soviet Union. It lasted from 1945 to 1989. During this time people were always on �the edge of there seats� waiting for open war to break out. Citizens of the world had to sit back and watch intently to what was the closest the world has ever seen to a nuclear war. People were afraid of what might happen between these two countries. During the Cold War, the US and the USSR brought more and more countries into this turning it into something where the people of the world had to choose sides. There were many different reasons why the Cold War began. Some people backed up these reasons, and others showed very little patriotism. The Cold War began after WWII. When the Germans lost, the world had to come up with a way to split up what Germany had conquered. They decided to divide among the winning countries of WWII, the United States, Great Britain, France, and the Soviet Union. Of the four countries, the USSR was the only communist country.
