McPhearson Book Review, for cause and comrades Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
What made the men from the Civil War time period risk their lives while everyone around them was being shot and killed? Why did volunteers and men who suffered many casualties fight in the Civil War? Those questions are exactly what “For Cause and Comrade” was based on and tried to answer. The author, McPherson, gave several reasons as to why the men fought in this war. He based his book on a group of soldiers that came from different backgrounds. The sample group was over represented with officers, middle and upper class people, and Confederates. Non slave holding whites, the illiterate, and black soldiers were under represented, while the age factor and the branches of service were fairly represented. There were 3 different types of motivation that McPherson mentioned, initial, sustaining, and combat motivation.
