Is Refusing to Employ a Smoker Ethical? I believe that it is not okay to implement a law that would prohibit an employee from smoking tobacco on the job, and especially in the employee�s free time away from work. Montgomery County, Pennsylvania is trying to implement a new proposal to only allow nonsmokers to obtain government jobs. This was inspired by a Michigan company�s, Weyco Inc., decision to dismiss workers who smoke at work, or at home. The purpose of this idea of only hiring nonsmokers is supposed to cut down on the health care costs for the government. This is a good idea for any company, but there are many issues and problems that would arise from implementing such a law (Detroit Press). There are many issues that would come along with a company trying to pursue an antismoker proposal. Many smokers would feel as though they are being discriminated. I believe many people would agree that it is a very poor law. People already have to deal with enough discrimination about what color and ethnicity they are.
