Explore the breakdown of relationships in both novels- Sethe and Paul D and Antoinette and Rochester. In both the novels Beloved and Wide Sargasso Sea, relationships are central to the plot and it is the breakdown of them that allows Morrison and Rhys to express their personal thoughts by using the fictional characters of Sethe, Paul D, Antoinette and Rochester to do so. The relationships within the novels are communicated to the reader in a number of ways, possibly the most important being narrative perspective. In Beloved the narrative is in the third person giving an omniscient view on the events. This gives the effect of being unbiased therefore allowing the whole story to be told to the reader. In contrast Wide Sargasso Sea (WSS) part two which features the relationship breakdown of Antoinette and Rochester is narrated to us by Rochester which therefore is biased against Antoinette as we do not get her own opinion.
