Hypertension is a disease that affects millions of Americans each year. It is widely known by many and fully understood by few. By definition hypertension is an arterial blood disease in which chronic high blood pressure is the primary symptom.2 There are many different types of hypertension. The two major types of hypertension are primary and secondary hypertension.7 Primary hypertension is also called essential hypertension. This is the type of hypertension that is diagnosed in the majority of all cases and it has no known causes.7 Secondary hypertension is the second largest diagnosed type. Secondary hypertension, unlike primary hypertension is often caused by reversible factors.7 These include kidney damage or impaired kidney function, thyroid tumors or over activity of the adrenal gland, thyroid dysfunction, coarctation of the aorta, pregnancy, sleep apnea syndrome, medication, recreational drugs, and some foods.7 After the underlying causes are corrected secondary hypertension is sometimes curable.
