Charles Finney: A Brief Overview The social flux of the early 19th century contributed to many of the successful religious movements of the time. Independent religious movements such as Mormonism, Millerism, and the Jehovah�s Witnesses are just a small sample of the many trans-denominational movements that occurred during the said time period (�Finney,� 2005). The westward expansion of the United States brought about many new opportunities for the implementation of religious ideas and the movements that followed shortly thereafter. In sum, the people of the United States were more than ready to dispense the �old� ways of thinking and lend their ears to the enlightened voices of the new age. During the early to mid 19th century, Charles Grandison Finney was considered America�s foremost revivalist and leader of the second greatest religious revival in the United States, known as the Second Great Awakening in historical circles.
