Race, ras, n. a body of individuals sprung from a common stock. a breed or stock – Webster’s Dictionary, edition 2005.
This definition does not tell us much but how races are determined with in the human species. There are two different ways to look at race. How do we decide if it is biological or a cultural term? Is there a biological difference between races or is it a cultural separation that we, as the human species, have created in our need for superiority over others.
In biological view, we must look at subspecies - a comparable scientific term for race. Author Michael Park defines subspecies as physically distinguishable populations with in a species. What are these characteristics that divide populations into groups and how do we interpret them?
First let us look at skin color because this is often how populations of humans are divided up. Skin color is determined by the amount on melanin found in the skin. This melanin causes darkening of the skin when exposed to the sun, therefore creating different shades in skin color.......
