The history of the word swinging was previously called wife swapping, but wife swappers needed an easier name to describe the activity. As wife swapping gained popularity and media attention in the early fifties, the activity was changed to swinging and more recently the lifestyle. Swinging has its roots from the U.S. Air Force fighter pilots during World War II (Swingers Board, 2005). The pilots who were wealthy enough to move their wives closer to base. The base became filled with married couples and wives losing their husbands in the war. This base was the highest rate of fatality of any branch in the U.S. Air Force fighter pilots, leaving the base an unusual social setting, in which non-monogamy between the married couples and the widowers became acceptable. These arrangements persisted near Air Force bases throughout World War II and into the Korean War. By the time the Korean War ended, these groups had spread from the bases to the nearby suburbs. The media picked up on them in the late fifties and early sixties, which started the phenomenon known as wife swapping. ......
