Social Context-
Pocahontas was an Indian princess, due to being the daughter of Powhatan, the great chief of the Algonquian Indians in the Tidewater region of Virginia. She was probably born around 1596 or 1597 in the village of Werowocomoco. The colonists believed this because of her father’s principal residence there until 1609.
Pocahontas’ actual birth mother is unknown today. Surely it was one of Powhatan’s many wives that conceived the princess; she did have more than 100 older brothers and sisters. Once it was rumored that her mother was of ‘Runic’, or Scandinavian origin. However, this theory has no real basis and has never been taken seriously by historians.
Just like all other Powhatan’s Pocahontas had two names. The name Pocahontas was given to her by her father upon birth, which in English translates to “Bright Stream Between Two Hills”, or “Little Wanton” in Powhatan tongue.
