Hate has the ability to change every essence about someone’s character. In the novel, The Scarlet Letter, written by Nathaniel Hawthorn, Roger Chillingworth went though dramatic changes over the course of the novel because of the hate he felt toward Hester and Dimmesdale’s relationship. Physically, he underwent a complete physical transformation from the time of his marriage to Hester, until he dies. Emotionally, he went from a stable, conscientious man to irrational and malicious. Spiritually, he went from being naturally good to being an evil person as the story progresses.
Roger Chillingworth is introduced as a tired, old, worn-out man. He is not very attractive and even has some deformation with one shoulder being higher than the other. Additionally, his eyes had sunk in between the wrinkles on his face, and his gray beard had grown long. He was not, however, always like that.
