For nearly as long as the institution of slavery has existed, there has been strong opposition to it. From slave revolts and mutinies, to philosophers examining the inherent social and moral dilemmas associated with the enslavement and mistreatment of our fellow man, slavery has continuously caused great conflict in many civilizations. Most modern antislavery movements and sentiments have emerged in two somewhat distinct, but intertwined forms: Religious convictions, and secular reasoning. The arguments of Sewell’s The Selling of Joseph and Woolman’s Some Considerations on the Keeping of Negroes incorporate aspects of these two forms. Sewell, as a judge, is a man who relies on reason and facts to make his point, but he is also a deeply religious man, and so, incorporates many biblical references into his argument. Woolman’s arguments, on the other hand, rely almost entirely on his religious beliefs and convictions, but while his delivery differs somewhat, the message stays essentially the same: Slavery is immoral, it is a crime against humanity, and we as men do not have the right ......
