Virginia Woolf’s Ideal Heroine Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
Throughout the tradition of heroic quests, women play a subordinate role and men dominate. In To the Lighthouse, Virginia Woolf challenges literary tradition by exalting the feminine roles while demeaning the chief male character. Mrs. Ramsay is a beautiful, caring woman with a strong influence on those around her. In contrast, Mr. Ramsay is a self-absorbed man whose child despises him because of his lack of emotion. The second female lead in the novel is Lily, who challenges societal norms by living the life of both woman and artist. To convince hesitant readers in the 1920s of a heroic quest in which the Mother and Female are central, Woolf must degrade masculinity while dividing feminine strengths into two characters that together make up her composite heroine.
By exposing the novel’s leading male character Mr. Ramsay, an extreme case of the male ego, Woolf’s acts make a motherly world view more pleasing.
