Electoral College vs. Direct Election By Andy Shepheard Ever since the United States’ Presidential election in 2000 controversy has rehatched about whether or not the Electoral College is the best system for our country to use when electing our leader. Some believe that a direct election or even some type of mixed system which has become popular in seemingly every other country around the world may be better. It is a mistake to think this issue is one that is new and unique to our generation. The Electoral College has faced scrutiny since its implementation while facing and successfully beating many attempts to have it abolished. The 2000 election was only a means to allow this argument to be refueled and since then the 109th Congress has proposed at least five pieces of legislation that call for an amendment to the Constitution eliminating the Electoral College.
