The Quakers Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The Quakers were very unique group of followers through out history. George Fox is credited for starting this movement. Fox in was originally a shoemaker in 1646, when he started a group “Friends of Truth”. Which was later called “Society of Friends”. Today they are called simply “Friends”. This group received the name Quakers because of their religious practices. Francis Higginson observed in 1653 while attending a meeting; “…many of them (Quakers), sometimes men, but more frequently women and children, fall into quaking fits… Those who are taken with these fits fall suddenly down, as it were in a swoon, as though they were surprised with epilepsy or apoplexy, and lie groveling on the earth, and struggling as if were for life…While the agony of the fit is upon them their lips quiver, their flesh and joints tremble, their bellies swell as though blown up with wind, they foam at the mouth, and sometimes purge as if they had taken physic. In this fit they continue sometimes an hour or two, sometimes longer, before they roar out horribly with a voice greater than the voice of a man…gr......
