William Shakespeare, in the opening of the play, outlines the basic suggestion that the characters are experiencing a traumatic period in their life and this is emphasised through one of the guards saying “I am sick at heart” helping us to understand the deep and irreparable unhappiness in the air. Also Hamlet expresses his disgust with the state of affairs in his first soliloquy so we understand how low Hamlet feels and this prepares us for his melancholy in the next scene. However this is not due to one solitary factor. Shakespeare tells the audience that both the death of his Father, and his ‘Mother’s hasty marriage’ are causing him upset and distress, but we are led to conclude that he is in fact more upset about the lack of mourning from his Mother, than by the death of his Father. Immediately language is used to set the scene. Using fragments of conversation such as ‘give you good night’ and ‘a piece of him’, Shakespeare establishes a mood of anxiety and dread. The verse does not flow and it is made up of broken rhythms with an atmosphere of unease, apprehension and confusio......
