Status politics play an important role in defining the way society views certain societal concerns such as smoking. The way a society is set-up will shape its ideas on what is deviant and what is not. Social stratification is the specific societal phenomenon that distinguishes who in society will define deviance. Through stratification those in the upper levels of stratification consequently decide what is deviant and should be illegal. Justin L. Tuggle and Malcolm D.
