Many people know the famous story of the Genesis flood but do not recognize how much it resembles the Gilgamesh flood story. There are differences, naturally, between the two. However, the similarities are rather astounding. It�s fascinating how the stories are very much the same on the surface, yet the details of each have their own ways of expressing and conveying a flood disaster through writing. The flood of Gilgamesh was written before 2000 B.C, whereas the Genesis story was written in 400 BC, clearly much later. Biblical writers most likely knew of the previous flood story but revised it so that it fit with their own ideologies, mythology, and world view. Although there are differences which really distinguish the biblical version of the story from the ancient version, the general idea is very similar. In both versions of the flood story some event takes place which angers God (in Genesis) and the gods (in Gilgamesh).
