Oscar Wilde’s “The Importance of Being Earnest” is not all that ‘earnest’ as it should be. Wilde creates a play consisting of hypocrisy, inversion, characters leaving double lives and the constraints of morality during the Victorian period; which he tends to mock and trivialize. The play itself is frivolous, yet there seems to be no meaning behind the farcical acts.
The play’s central plot—the man who is and isn’t Ernest/earnest—presents a moral paradox. Earnestness, which refers to both the quality of being serious and the quality of being sincere, is the play’s primary object of satire. Earnestness is the opposition of morality in “The Importance of Being Earnest”. Earnestness has taken many forms, including self-righteousness, self-importance and sense of duty. The word ‘earnest’ tends to mean ‘unimportant’ to characters in the play.
