In the book Nickel and Dimed by Barbara Ehrenreich, the author works at various low-wage jobs to see if she can survive on a low income. Barbara finds a job as a waitress at a restaurant where she makes $2.43 per hour plus tips. She does not enjoy the job, and based off of personal experience, I agree with her. Being a food service worker is a stressful and difficult job because of the hard work, unpredictable pay, and impolite management.
First, working in food service is difficult because it is hard work. You are always trying to make your customers happy in order to get a good tip. You also don’t want to make a mistake. I was always scared that my boss would think I was irresponsible and my customers would be angry if I took their order incorrectly. It’s also hard work because when you are having a bad day, you still have to show up with a smile on your face. You also need to work hard to find something to do even when it is a slow period in the restaurant.
