Fahrenheit 451 Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In part one of the novel Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury entitled “The Hearth and the Salamander,” the main character, Guy Montag, experiences a drastic mental and emotional transformation that completely alters his view of life and society. At the outset of the novel, Montag is portrayed as a conforming member of society who takes pleasure in his work of burning illegal books. However, as the novel progresses, Montag becomes aware of the actual emptiness and shallowness of his life. Through his exposure to certain characters around him, he becomes increasingly discontent and apathetic with his job, his marriage, and society in general. One of the first and most important influences in Montag’s self-awareness is his encounter with Clarisse McClellan, his seventeen year old neighbor. Clarisse is an open-minded and confident person who is aware of her surroundings and the corruptness of society. Unlike the stereotypical people surrounding her, Clarisse is extremely passionate about life and nature. Through her love of life, she arouses Montag’s curiosity and reveals to him the absence......
