The Impact of the Railroad on Nevada The building of the Central Pacific through Nevada in the 1860’s and its continued operation was very important to the economic development of the state. The idea of a railroad goes back to many years before the Civil War. Five different routes were surveyed under the War Department in 1853-54, and the results showed four routes, two northern and two southern. The interests in railroads gave Nevada an opportunity to gain economic advantages. Before the Central Pacific reached it’s destination it passed over hundreds of miles of Nevada. Hundreds of communities were developed because of this. As workmen built the tracks across the State, towns appeared where the railroad builders decided to locate mainline stations. When it was completed, the Central Pacific attracted farmers, miners, and merchants. It became the focal point for every mining boom. The success of the mining booms advertised Nevada and brought thousands of people to many different parts of the state. Nevada’s population increased from 42,491 in 1870 to 62,266 in 1880. T......
