Alistair Macleod was born in Saskatchewan but was brought up in Nova Scotia, where he attended university and became a writer. Here he wrote a magnificent story about a man who underwent crude, back breaking labor for twelve hours a day. Applied in this story is a very distinctive theme that really touches the readers of it. We define the theme as a main idea of a story or piece of writing, or an idea that the author is trying to convey. Throughout the short story "The Closing of Summer", the theme of loss and death occurs a great deal. The literary devices used to create this theme are, motif and irony. These three devices combine to give a clear understanding of the theme that the author is trying to display. We define motifs as a recurring idea of a piece of writing that usually contributes the overall impression of the piece of writing.
