By: Dan Heflin Wrigley Field is a field of many memories and lots of history, but we have to start from the beginning. When and why was Wrigley Field built? And the historical moments of the Friendly Confines are ones we will never forget. Last but not least, the changes to the field over time have been documented. When and why was Wrigley Field built? That is the question. Wrigley Field was built in 1914, over what was originally a cemetery, which makes Wrigley Field the second oldest ballpark behind Boston’s Fenway Park (1912). Which brings up another point. Wrigley Field wasn’t always called Wrigley Field. It was originally called Weeghman Park, after the last name of the original owner. The field was made for a Federal League team, the Federals and Whales. Second, the historical moments of the Friendly Confines are ones we will never forget. During Game 3 of the World Series, Babe Ruth made his famous “called shot,” when he allegedly pointed to a bleacher location. Ruth then hit Charlie Root’s next pitch for a homer.
