In Richard s. Brownlee’s “Gray Ghosts of the Confederacy” you as a reader get an understanding of what type of war took place in the west. It was not the same type of civil war that took place in the East between organized military forces but rather completely different. A brutal war was being fought in areas west of the Mississippi River. This war was centered in Missouri but spread to Kansas, Arkansas, and Texas. It was a war without laws. It was full of ambushes, arsons, robberies, and murders. Brownlee gives you a first hand account of why and how this type of war came to be and the major contributors of it.
Brownlee felt the cause of guerilla warfare goes back to the time of the Kansas-Nebraska Act. The “Border War” between Kansas and Missouri was a precursor to guerilla warfare. The hatred between the two came to the forefront during the Civil War. The most notable factor leading to the fighting in Missouri were the abuses brought onto the civilians by the Union officers and troops while occupying the area.
