In Richard Preston’s, The Hot Zone, an extremely lethal virus from the tropics of Africa is introduced as the Ebola virus. Preston describes the Ebola virus in horrific, but fascinating detail between the years 1967 and 1993. Throughout the 26-year period, many people were infected with Ebola, as well as fatalities in Africa and Reston, Maryland.
Ebola is defined as part of the filovirus family, which is also related to the Marburg virus. Ebola has three known subtypes: 1) Ebola Zaire, the most lethal of all strains of Ebola. This subtype kills nine out of 10 of its victims. 2) Ebola Sudan and 3) Ebola Reston. As mentioned earlier, Marburg is also in the filovirus family. Marburg made its appearance in 1967 in a monkey house in Germany. At that time, the exportation of monkeys to Europe was a hot commodity for making lots of money; therefore, the animals were sold in mass amounts.
