Benefits of Stem Cell Research There is now hope for people who suffer from many fatal illnesses. The key to this new discovery is stem cells. What exactly is a stem cell? Stem cells are cells that have the ability to divide for indefinite periods and can give rise to the many different cell types that make up an organism. The formation of a stem cell begins about four days after fertilization when a ball of cells called a blastocyst forms. The inner cell mass of the blastocyst is the location from which the stem cells are extracted. These cells are known as embryonic and have the potential to develop into any of the two hundred cells in the body such as heart, skin, and nerve cells. Another type of cell being used in research is the adult stem cell that has recently been found to have the ability to stimulate growth of a wide variety of tissues. Thanks to numerous discoveries, scientists have found a way to harvest stem cells and develop them into most types of human cells.
