Davis, Glyn. “Ulysses and the Temptation of Idleness: Thinking About Politics Through Poetry.” Australian Journal of Political Science. 33(1998): 73-85 The passage under analysis is Ulysses and the Temptation of Idleness: Thinking About Politics Through Poetry, by Glyn Davis. Davis believes that Tennyson used this particular story to portray a political leader that is decreasing in power towards the end of their career. I agree with the author based on the information he offers. All of the power that Ulysses has experienced throughout his life ends up making him feel useless. Hence the use of the word idleness in the title. Davis believes that Ulysses is the character chosen for this poem because his characteristics describe those of a politician near retirement. Tennyson does not portray him the same way Homer does in his famous epithets. Ulysses’ behavior is like other politicians because he spends his whole life seeking meaning and purpose and does not find it because of greed.
