Egypt Gift of the Nile Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Herodotus, on his visit to Egypt quoted “Egypt is the gift of the Nile River”, and so it is indeed true. Egypt’s survival as a civilization would not have occurred if it weren’t for this vast river called the Nile. The Nile brought with it life for the Egyptians to capture. The Nile River was associated with life; it brought fertility to the Egyptian crops. The predictability of the Nile’s annual flooding allowed for the civilization to create a calendar based on the seasons of harvest. By doing such, they were able to predict the best time to plant their crops. The crops depended on the River flooding which brought with it rich black silt that fed the many types of plants. The annual flooding gave birth to the land, and could easily take that away. Too much flooding could be disastrous for the settlements along the River, and too less flooding could mean famine. The Nile also supplied the Egyptians with water, considering they are located in a desert, rainfall is minimum.
