It is common knowledge that Shakespeare often included racial and religious minorities in his works; a gesture considered gracious and enlightened when contrasted with the intolerant standards of his time. However, upon greater scrutiny, it is apparent that Shakespeare’s Titus subscribes to a higher order of thinking than his minority counter-parts. That higher order of thinking is a consideration for the advancement of society or the “greater common good.” Contrarily, the Others in this play maintain a lower level of functionality; that of the instinctual preservation of the blood line. These animalistic depictions are clearly portrayed through Aaron’s bargaining for his son’s life, and Tamora’s lust to avenge her slaughtered first-born. While Titus means to preserve order and ensure prosperity in the community, his enemies lash out like wild beasts when their family is threatened, and endeavor to eradicate all natural predators.
