Macbeth; the importance of asides Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

“There’s no art/ To find the mind’s construction in the face” (I, 4, 13-14). When King Duncan says he means that, there is no way to read a man’s mind by just looking at his face. Only by the use of stage whispers does the reader know what is going on inside the characters’ minds. In Macbeth by William Shakespeare, this method of the characters talking to themselves was often used to express what the characters were thinking and feeling. These whispers are more important than what is being said because without them, the reader would not know what the character was thinking and the plot of the story would be different. An example of how important the stage whispers is, “Why do I yield to that suggestion/ Whose horrid image doth unfix my hair/ And make my seated heart knock at my ribs, / Against the use of nature” (I, 3, 147-150). When Macbeth says this, he cannot believe that he is thinking about murdering Duncan. The reader only learns that he is even thinking this because of the stage whisper.
